Privacy Landscape Worldwide & Personal Data Protection null Bangalore Meet 24 May 2025 Null/OWASP Combined Meet
Abstract
Abstract:
In the digital age, the right to privacy and the mechanisms of data protection have become central to public policy, corporate governance, and individual freedoms. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of global privacy trends, spotlighting key regulations like the GDPR, CCPA, and PIPEDA, and examines how countries are evolving toward data sovereignty, transparency, and user consent. Special emphasis is placed on India's privacy evolution—from the 2017 Supreme Court ruling recognizing privacy as a fundamental right to the enactment of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Additionally, the presentation explores the interplay between Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) and vulnerability findings in cybersecurity, emphasizing the practical convergence of privacy compliance and security measures. Through this lens, we aim to highlight how privacy is not only a legal requirement but a cornerstone of trust and accountability in the digital ecosystem.
Prerequisites:
Familiarity with how personal data is collected, stored, and processed (e.g., through apps, websites, databases).
Awareness of what privacy means in a digital context (e.g., controlling personal information, consent).
Some knowledge of compliance and regulatory frameworks.India leads in open-source security, bug bounties, and community talent — but we still haven't produced a cybersecurity product unicorn. This talk explores the untold story of India's cybersecurity evolution, from its service-export roots to its rise as an open-source contributor. It maps the foundational shifts shaping the next ten years: agentic AI, sovereign identity, post-quantum cryptography, and cyber-physical security. Through real-world trends, funding data, and market gaps, we will uncover why India is uniquely positioned to lead the next wave of cybersecurity innovation.
